[BGA X ARGOS] The Role and Necessity of Identity Verification in Blockchain & Web3 Gaming

This is an interview jointly prepared by BGA and ARGOS. It dives into why identity verification is essential in Web3 gaming and it’s truly an insightful read!

Q1. Web3 gaming was built on the promise of decentralization and pseudonymity-but how do we maintain integrity in an open ecosystem while preventing abuse, bots, and fraud?

A1. One of the greatest strengths and simultaneously, the biggest challenge of the Web3 ecosystem is anonymity. While the freedom for users to join without restrictions is a major innovation, it also opens the door to abuse, bot usage, and fraudulent activities. The root cause of many of these malicious behaviors is anonymity.

To address this, ARGOS proposes identity-based pseudonymization. Through our ID check solution, a user's real identity is verified once, and only non-identifiable attributes such as age, gender, and nationality are retained. All original personal data is immediately discarded. This approach is fully compliant with global privacy regulations such as GDPR, while enabling behavior-based moderation and trust-based gameplay. In short, it allows developers to maintain decentralization and user privacy without compromising safety and accountability.

Q2. Many Web3 gamers value speed, immersion, and accessibility. Given that the average player decides whether to stay in a game within the first 20 seconds, how can identity verification be introduced without breaking that flow?

A2. User experience is critical in Web3 gaming. If immersion is broken early on, user drop-off increases rapidly. That’s why ARGOS focuses on designing frictionless identity verification.

The key is to allow anonymous gameplay at the initial stage. Verification should only be required when users attempt to access core features such as leaderboard participation, suspicious behavior triggers, asset trading, rewards collection, or community interaction. ARGOS’s eKYC solution can be seamlessly integrated into the game UI and typically completes within 30 seconds. This ensures core security and trust mechanisms are activated without disrupting gameplay flow.

Q3. Why do you think many game developers still see KYC as a ‘compliance burden’ rather than a design opportunity? How can we shift that mindset?

A3. KYC should not be seen as a checkbox for regulatory compliance it can actually enhance the trustworthiness of a gaming platform. The more interaction among players, the more likely anonymity-driven incidents will occur. Applying KYC selectively to high-trust areas of the game can foster healthier interactions.

When reframed as a design element, KYC becomes part of a trust architecture. For example, only verified users could access vaults or assume guild leadership. This strengthens game governance and community integrity. ARGOS supports flexible KYC configurations based on each game’s needs ensuring that the level and purpose of identity verification match the game’s goals and context.

Q4. Identity isn’t only about compliance — it’s also about protecting players. How can KYC and identity systems be designed to safeguard younger users and prevent abuse, without being overly invasive?

A4. Full KYC is not necessary for most core gameplay experiences. However, games are inherently social environments, and anonymity often reduces users' sense of responsibility leading to issues such as harassment, abuse, and fraud. Identity verification can serve as a psychological deterrent against such harmful behaviors.

Simply put, in a fully anonymous environment, people are more likely to engage in malicious actions toward others. But when there’s even a possibility that their identity could be known, those behaviors become much less likely.

Additionally, by categorizing content that is restricted to adults, identity verification can be used to confirm age appropriate access. ARGOS provides a fully end-to-end identity verification process that can be customized to suit each game developer’s specific needs.

A5. As Web3 games evolve to include asset ownership, they begin to overlap with financial services and related regulations. Ultimately, a Web3 game is a Web2 game plus verifiable user ownership of in-game assets. This ownership often involves tradable elements, bringing the game under financial service rules.

Financial services regulations primarily focus on two areas: consumer protection and anti-fraud measures. To achieve these, developers must be able to identify the player behind each transaction. ARGOS provides lightweight, API-based integration options, allowing game studios to implement identity checks only where regulation is most likely to apply. This modular approach is ideal for smaller teams looking to stay ahead of compliance shifts without heavy infrastructure.

Q6. In order for the Web3 gaming ecosystem to move forward, what technological or policy changes do you believe are most necessary?

A6. For Web3 games to thrive long term, there must be clarity on two fronts: the in-game use of assets and accountability in transactions. The core difference from Web2 is that players own their assets. But ownership also implies responsibility and that brings regulatory obligations.

From a tech standpoint, games must support proof of ownership for digital assets. From a policy perspective, Web3 games should adopt the same consumer protection principles as financial services. ARGOS supports both needs through eKYC solutions that confirm real user identities while enabling games to build systems with transparent accountability for in-game economic activities.

Q7. What kind of impact or value creation does Argos expect from the collaboration with BGA ?

A7. BGA represents a key network of global blockchain game developers. Through this partnership, ARGOS aims to boost global brand recognition, as well as expand pilot opportunities for real-world integration of identity solutions across Web3 games.

BGA member studios will also benefit from exclusive perks such as discounted onboarding rates and dedicated technical support packages making it easier to integrate identity verification from the early stages of game development. Ultimately, we hope this collaboration strengthens both the trust and sustainability of the Web3 gaming ecosystem.
